COMPREHENSION

Read the passage below then answer the questions that follow.

What do employers expect from school leaver? The answer to this question is not easy, but in general employers seem to look for a number of qualities in job-applicants.

In the first place, employers like would be employees to know their own minds. Employers like applicants to be decisive – to have a clear idea of what they want to do in life, as well as realistic notion of what is involved in achieving their goals. Thus applicants who are “career conscious” definitely stand a better chance than those who are indecisive.

Clearly, applicants can only show this quality if they have done some “homework” before the interview, to find out more about the organization they are applying to join, and to understand the kinds of opportunity that might open up. They should also find out if possible about the history, aims and problems of the organization, the products, if any; it’s training programmes, and is long-term job prospects.

However, this does not mean that the applicant should try to appear a “know all” at the interview. Far from it! While employers expect certain minimum academic achievements in their would-be employees, they are far more interested in whether the applicant is ready, willing and able to learn, often from fellow-workers who may, on paper, be far less well qualified.

This last point is crucial. A new employee must have respect for those already employed in the organization, even if the latter are less qualified. There are plenty of older employees around whom when young did not have the same educational opportunities as the present generation. There can be no future for new employees who look down on any of their colleagues or senior officers on these grounds.

On the other hand, employees do like their young workers to be reasonably ambitious. Organizations depend a great deal for their growth and prosperity on the willingness of their young employees to strive to improve themselves, and a spirit of friendly competition is usually highly desirable, provided it is carried on in a reasonable way.

However, ambition is not the same thing as greed. Many young people when they first get a job think that the world is at their feet. In their desire to impress their friends and relatives, they often bite off more than they can chew in terms of financial obligations. It is easier to apply for a car in terms of financial obligations. It is easier to apply for a car or motor cycle loan to honour the obligations incurred thereon. Employers lay great stress on new employees having a realistic judgement of their income, so that they can budget properly in their personal affairs.

2. He felt that things had really begun to go wrong from the time of the great meeting, the time when they all declared him the Teacher. Since then the rifts between the various factions had widened and the attempt by the Kiama to burn people’s houses and their threat to Joshua and his followers were expression of that widened gulf. Perhaps he should not have resigned from the Kiama, he told himself over and over again. What if he had made his stand clear at that meeting? That was now a lost opportunity and he had to reckon with the present. Still he wondered if he had not betrayed the tribe; the tribe he had meant to unite; the tribe he had wanted to save; the people he had wanted to educate, giving them all the benefits of the white man’s coming.

For Waiyaki knew that not all the ways of the white man were bad. Even is religion was not essentially bad. Some good, some truth shone through it. But the religion, the faith, needed washing, cleaning away all the dirt, leaving only the eternal. And that eternal that was the truth had to be reconciled to the traditions of the people. A people’s  traditions could not be swept away overnight. That way laid disintegration. Such a tribe would have no roots, for a people’s roots were in their traditions going back to the past, the beginning, kikuyu and Mumbai. A religion that took no account of people’s way of life, was useless. It would not satisfy. It would not be a living experience, a source of life and vitality. It would only maim a man’s soul, making him fanatically cling to whatever promised security, otherwise he would be lost. Perhaps that was what was wrong with Joshua. He had clothed himself with a religion decorated and smeared with everything white. He renounced his past and cut himself away from those life-giving traditions of the tribe. And because he had nothing to rest upon, something rich and firm on which to stand and grow, he had nothing to rest upon, something rich and firm on which to stand and grow, he had to cling with his hand to whatever the missionaries taught him promised future.

3. Read the narrative below and answer the questions that follow

This thing happened long time ago when people first appeared on earth. One day, the people were told that if they didn’t want to die, they should send Chameleon with a fat piece of meat to take to the moon who would pass it to God. They were also told to give Lizard a hoe to take to the moon. Then, if Chameleon reached the moon with the piece of meat before Lizard with the hoe, the people would not die, but would live forever.

That day, the people never slept a wink. They stayed awake throughout the night and early the next morning. They sent Chameleon far ahead of Lizard. However, on the way, the temptation to taste the succulent appetizing piece of meat proved too great, so Chameleon stopped to taste a little meat. The meat proved to be tender and juicy and chameleon ended up eating a chunk of it. The remaining piece that was to be taken to the moon became dirty, covered with soil. Once Chameleon realized that he was late, he lowered the meat down from his back and begun to hurry, dragging it along. As Chameleon hurried along, all the other animals stared at him, sniggered and hid away. But of course, most of them had been envious of chameleon for the important errand on which he had been sent. So they were happy to see that he had failed. By the time Chameleon reached the moon, with the dirty piece of meat, Lizard had already handed the hoe to the moon and man thus lost the golden opportunity to acquire immortality. The moon chased away the Chameleon and threw the dirty piece of meat after him. The hoe which Lizard carried was used by the Luo to dig graves and bury their dead. Death had been born.

Since that time when Chameleon messed up the moon’s gift meat, the type of death from which an individual would die is fixed right on the day of his or her birth! And initially death didn’t come secretly to human beings. Death just sent word to whoever he wanted to take away to get ready on a particular day. But since no one liked to die, people used to give death a hard time. He always had to chase one person for days, before he overpowered and caught him. People used all sorts of tricks to evade death, so he decided to come secretly and catch them unawares. That’s why human beings never know the date they die.
